Netflix and Mojang announced an animated series based on Minecraft in May 2024, coinciding with the game's 15th anniversary. In 2025, Kevin Adams and Joe Xander, who previously worked on the animated film "Next Gen," were appointed as showrunners, and the writing team was led by Marvel's "What If...?" writer Ashley Bradley. At the same time, the Australian studio Flying Bark Productions, responsible for animation, joined the project.
After that, news about the animated series ceased. The project missed Netflix's presentation at the Annecy Festival in 2026, and over the past year, the companies have not shown any new images or videos. The prolonged silence gave rise to rumors of the show's possible cancellation.
What's on Netflix reached out to Netflix directly for comment. A representative for the service assured journalists that the animated series is still in production, and development is proceeding as planned. Soon after, public confirmation came from Mojang. Minecraft Creative Director Jens Bergensten replied to a fan on Bluesky:
"Yes, we are still working on it!"
According to What's on Netflix, production could extend until 2028. The animated series does not have an official release date.
