22 years later, it's revealed why Alfonso Cuarón refused to direct "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire"

Only David Yates, who directed the last four films, managed to establish himself in the franchise.

Producer David Heyman, 22 years later, explained why Alfonso Cuarón refused to direct "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire". After working on "Prisoner of Azkaban", the director was so exhausted that he didn't want to immediately return to the wizarding world.

In the official "Harry Potter" podcast, Heyman said that he offered Cuarón to stay in the franchise. In response, the director swore in Spanish, which in a censored translation can be interpreted as something like "are you out of your mind?"

According to Heyman, the director's condition is clearly visible in photographs from that period: "I look at photos of Alfonso from that time and I see how exhausted he was." The producer is well acquainted with the situation, as Cuarón is among his closest friends and is his son's godfather.

"Goblet of Fire" was eventually directed by Mike Newell, who, in Heyman's words, also finished production "completely broken". The producer offered each director to continue working, but only David Yates stayed in the franchise. He directed the final four films, from "Order of the Phoenix" to the second part of "Deathly Hallows".
