CDPR Director Compares The Witcher 4 to GTA VI and Explains Development Approach

The manager is confident that specialists at Rockstar Games operate similarly.

One of the co-CEOs of CD Projekt RED, Michal Nowakowski, recently gave an interview to The Game Business. During the conversation, he explained the team's approach to developing their projects.

The manager acknowledges that developers consider project costs when planning, but the budget factor is not decisive. CD Projekt RED strives to ensure the necessary level of quality:

We are in business, so I would be lying if I told you, "Cost [of development] doesn't matter to us." However, first and foremost, we look at whether the result of our work meets the required level of quality. This is the most important criterion we pay attention to.

Nowakowski believes that if development is guided by cost-saving, a game of The Witcher 4's caliber cannot be made. He is confident that the creators of Grand Theft Auto VI use a similar development approach:

I certainly wouldn't put "project cost" first, however strange that may sound. We try to stay within the established framework, and if the budget exceeds it, we sit down and think about what that means for the entire project. But I certainly wouldn't say that "development is carried out solely for cost-saving reasons." If you want to make development cost-oriented — and for many games, this is a perfectly reasonable business approach — then a game like The Witcher 4 cannot be created. I doubt that GTA VI development was done with an eye on cost-saving. Moreover, I am one hundred percent sure that it was not.

The result of CD Projekt RED's work (if nothing changes) can be seen in 2028 — The Witcher 4 does not yet have a more precise release date.

Grand Theft Auto VI will be released earlier: it is scheduled for November 19 this year on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. Nothing has been reported yet about the PC version's release window.
