Christopher Judge explained why he didn't return to the role of Kratos in the God of War series
Christopher Judge, who played Kratos in the modern God of War games, could have also played the character in the Amazon series. At Fan Expo Canada, the actor revealed that he discussed participation with the creators, auditioned, and even began getting in shape for the role:
"I thought, 'God, what a wonderful legacy I could leave for my grandson.' So I started training and got bigger. Then the reality of what was happening set in. I was actually auditioning. It was incredibly difficult for me to memorize lines, although I never had problems with that before. So my mind and body started telling me: 'You don't want this.'"
Judge explained that at 62, he is no longer ready to return to the lifestyle of a leading star in a major television project. The actor recalled his years working on "Stargate," when filming took up a significant part of his life:
"I was one of the main actors in 'Stargate' from 33 to 44, and then I stopped. Now, at 62, I have no desire to live like that again. I don't want to work 16-18 hours, constantly diet, and train."
Ultimately, Ryan Hurst got the role of Kratos, but later the actor tore his biceps, underwent serious surgery, and dropped out of the project. He was replaced by 57-year-old Dave Bautista. Judge supported both actors, although he expressed concern about Bautista's current form:
"First and foremost, I want everything related to God of War to turn out great. Ryan seemed like an absolutely correct choice to me: he played all the games, is a gamer himself, and recently became a father. Who would be better? [...] Hearing Bautista's name, I thought: 'Didn't he recently lose about 45 kilograms?' I think he'll do great. I just hope that regaining his previous weight won't cause him health problems."
Filming for the God of War series is planned to resume in mid-October. The premiere date has not yet been announced.
