The Witcher 3 Remaster Will Feature a New Graphics Engine - No Problems Expected on Steam Deck

News

The performance of The Witcher 3 is expected to remain unchanged, while the graphics will improve.

At Gamescom, the CD Projekt RED team showcased the remaster of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, as well as the story expansion Songs of the Past. After this, the developers gradually began to reveal technical details.

It was already known that The Witcher 3 would receive graphical improvements, and some players, especially on Steam Deck, became concerned: such graphical updates could potentially negatively impact performance. It seems there is no cause for concern after all.

Recently, a PC Gamer journalist spoke with CD Projekt RED producer Jakub Kutrzuba. He revealed that the remastered The Witcher 3 will use a new graphics engine. The technology update will allow developers to use resources more efficiently, so the visuals will improve, and performance should not suffer:

As for Steam Deck: from what we see, the game will run the same but look much better. Because, on the one hand, we are adding all these improvements, new content, updating assets, and on the other hand, we are implementing new rendering capabilities.

Kutrzuba did not elaborate on the details of these improvements but noted that this version of the graphics engine will also appear in The Witcher 3 for Nintendo Switch 2:

Thanks to the new graphics engine, many systems simply run faster. Therefore, we can present a more beautiful image with the same [system resource] costs, and this also applies to Nintendo Switch 2.

The Witcher 3 remaster is expected to be released on September 29, and the Songs of the Past expansion is planned for 2027.
