Netflix takes on "Ravenloft" - Dungeons & Dragons series to be produced by Alfonso Cuarón

At the same time, the company ceased development of another D&D series, announced for 2025.

Netflix has begun development of a live-action series "Ravenloft" based on the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Alfonso Cuarón, who directed "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," will serve as executive producer, and John August, author of "Big Fish" and "Corpse Bride," will write the screenplay. At the same time, the company abandoned another D&D project, the series The Forgotten Realms, which had been in development since 2025.

The creators describe "Ravenloft" as an epic fantasy where adventure meets gothic horror and tragic romance. The story will follow Strahd von Zarovich and show how lust for power, love, and obsession transformed the tragic anti-hero into a vampire and one of Dungeons & Dragons' most iconic villains.

Ravenloft first appeared in 1983 as a standalone adventure created by Tracy and Laura Hickman, and later grew into its own setting. Its action unfolds in the Domains of Dread, a world of isolated domains ruled by Darklords doomed to eternal torment. Strahd controls Barovia and holds its inhabitants in his gothic prison.

Gabriel Marano, Richard Schwartz, and Gaby Rodriguez have also joined the production team. Netflix has not yet ordered a full season, so there is no information about the cast, start of filming, or premiere date.
