New data confirms earlier reports that the optical drive supply chain is gradually shrinking, which could also affect Microsoft's plans for the next generation of Xbox.
The issue was highlighted by Digital Foundry, which confirmed a previous Windows Central report about difficulties with optical drive supplies. According to Digital Foundry, the situation is becoming "problematic" for Microsoft, as the company has to rely on purchasing ready-made optical drives from third-party manufacturers.
Digital Foundry also suggests that the current situation virtually guarantees the abandonment of a physical drive in the next Xbox console, known by the codename Project Helix.
However, the shortage of components likely only further reinforces a decision that Microsoft may have already made. Back in July, Windows Central reported, citing its own sources, that the next Xbox was initially being developed without an optical drive.
Regarding Project Helix, our sources also indicate that Microsoft's next-generation console will also forgo an optical drive.
Microsoft's transition to a fully digital model may be driven not only by changing consumer habits but also by objective problems in the production of necessary equipment. If the information is confirmed, Project Helix will be another step for Xbox towards a digital ecosystem.
