Sony has allowed critics to start sharing their impressions of Marvel's Wolverine. Reviewers particularly note the brutal and dynamic combat system, the atmosphere, and the successful portrayal of Wolverine himself, although the game couldn't completely shake off the legacy of the studio's previous projects.
One of the main strengths of Marvel's Wolverine, according to critics, is the combat. The developers clearly focused on Logan's signature ferocity: the hero literally tears enemies apart with his claws, and the battles turned out to be noticeably bloodier and more aggressive than in Insomniac's Spider-Man games. According to reviewers, when the game unlocks its potential, it offers some of the most spectacular and intense action sequences of the year.
However, some journalists needed time to get used to the combat system. Certain complaints also arose regarding the size of some locations, the monotony of individual situations, and the not-so-engaging world traversal. One critic noted that Marvel's Wolverine sometimes too strongly resembles its spiritual predecessors and could have benefited from a more compact and focused structure.
The plot, on the other hand, received a noticeably warmer reception. Critics emphasize that the story holds attention from beginning to end and shows that Insomniac understands Wolverine's character well. At the same time, the game differs significantly from Spider-Man and does not try to simply repeat the formula of the studio's previous superhero projects.
In some reviews, Marvel's Wolverine is already being called the best game version of Wolverine, surpassing even X-Men Origins: Wolverine. However, according to some journalists, the project still doesn't reach the level of ambition and quality of Spider-Man. Repetitiveness and sometimes boring exploration of locations prevent Wolverine from constantly surprising the player.
Critics agree that Wolverine will appeal to fans of Marvel comics and Wolverine in particular, but players familiar with Insomniac's work will not see anything fundamentally new.
Currently, Marvel's Wolverine has 78 points on Metacritic and 81 points on OpenCritic.
