"Resident Evil" by Zach Cregger Aims for Franchise's Best Opening - Forecast Raised for Second Time

Interest in the new Resident Evil adaptation continues to grow.

A week before its premiere, the box office projections for Zach Cregger's new "Resident Evil" have risen again. Analysts at Box Office Theory expect the film to earn between $45 million and $60 million in US and Canadian cinemas during its opening weekend.

This is the second increase in estimates in recent weeks. Previously, the film was projected to have an opening weekend in the range of $35 million to $50 million, but interest in the project continues to grow.

Even the lower end of the new forecast will allow the film to confidently set a franchise record. Currently, the best result belongs to "Resident Evil: Afterlife," which earned $26.65 million on its opening weekend in the US and Canada in 2010.

Zach Cregger's film will tell an independent story within the Resident Evil universe. Medical courier Brian, played by Austin Abrams, must deliver a donor organ to a Raccoon City hospital but finds himself in the midst of a struggle for survival in a city gripped by a T-virus outbreak.

"Resident Evil" is set to premiere on September 18, 2026.
