Zach Cregger told The Hollywood Reporter about the changes he made to "Resident Evil" after the first test screenings. According to the director, audiences liked the film, but found it had too much humor for a horror movie. After that, Cregger cut out a significant portion of the jokes:
"I learned that audiences really liked the film, but they found it too funny. So, during the test screenings, I removed as many jokes as possible. After that, it turned out that not only did the audience enjoy the film more, but I myself started to like it much more. Even a little humor works very effectively in horror, and I don't regret a single joke I cut from this film."
The new "Resident Evil" will tell a standalone story based on Resident Evil. The main character, Brian, played by Austin Abrams, is tasked with delivering a container with a donor organ to a Raccoon City hospital, but soon finds himself in the midst of a struggle for survival on the streets of the city, filled with monsters after the outbreak of the T-virus.
The film is set to premiere on September 18, 2026.
