New StarCraft is not a "seasonal" game - developer reveals inspiration and a hint at DOOM composer's music
Buyers will be offered a complete game.
At BlizzCon 2026, a new installment of the StarCraft franchise was announced. Initially, only a cinematic trailer was presented – without gameplay footage. It was known to be an open-world shooter, and a brief description of the debut promo video was given:
The sons and daughters of the Dominion answered the call when humanity needed them. They bravely held the line. Their sacrifice gave us another chance. Now it's your turn. Continue their feat. At any cost.
After the presentation, interviews began to emerge, during which creative director Dan Hay, known for his work on the latest numbered Far Cry installments, revealed various details about the new game.
For example, he confirmed that the new StarCraft will not be a “seasonal” game – they will offer players a complete project with an emphasis on the story:
If I had to describe the overall structure we're envisioning right now, I would say “boxed product” [i.e., complete]. It's an open-world shooter with an emphasis on story: players create a character, give them a name, and follow their story. This story has a beginning, a middle, and an end.
Dan Hay also spoke about the source of inspiration – he mentioned the series “Deadwood”:
One of the series that hooked me was “Deadwood.” I liked all the characters, and also how the creators created a sense of an entire universe and a huge world, even though the story centered around a rather small group of heroes. At the same time, it seemed that the world was much larger. I liked that they all knew each other, didn't get along, but understood that to survive, they would have to rely on each other. And if we wanted to make something like “Deadwood in space”... I think there's definitely something to such a project.
Mick Gordon recently published a StarCraft teaser on social media. Players speculate that the DOOM composer will write the music for the game.
The release of the new StarCraft is expected in 2030.
