Failed in cinemas, but became a hit at home: "Supergirl" topped HBO Max in 54 countries

"Supergirl" with Milly Alcock found an audience after failing in cinemas. The film was released on HBO Max on September 10 and six days later topped the platform's feature film rating in 54 countries. The film also rose to the top of the global HBO Max chart, surpassing "Practical Magic," whose interest grew after the release of its sequel.

Globally, "Supergirl" grossed only $126 million against a stated production budget of about $180 million, excluding marketing costs. Its success on HBO Max became the second confirmation that viewers who did not want to go to cinemas are actively watching the film at home. In late July and early August, "Supergirl" also topped the Fandango at Home chart for digital purchase and rental revenue.

For now, a sequel to "Supergirl" is not planned, but Kara Zor-El's story will continue in the new DC cinematic universe. Milly Alcock will reprise her role as the heroine in "Superman: Legacy," which will also feature David Corenswet's Superman and Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor. The film is scheduled to premiere on July 9, 2027.
