According to insider KeplerL2, the next portable PlayStation Project Canis (PSP 3) will be built on a custom 3nm AMD Canis processor. It will feature six Zen 6 cores – four Zen 6c and two energy-efficient Zen 6 LP – as well as 24 GB of unified LPDDR5X memory with a 192-bit bus. The estimated thermal design power of the device will be in the range of 15 to 25 W.
Graphics will be handled by a graphics accelerator with 16 RDNA 5 compute units and Dual-Issue FP32 support. In portable mode, the frequency will be 1.2 GHz, providing approximately 4.91 TFLOPS, while when connected to a docking station, the frequency is rumored to increase to 1.65 GHz, and performance to 6.75 TFLOPS.
However, the main element of the system will be PSSR 3.0. Due to limited power consumption, demanding games, according to the leak, will be rendered at a native resolution of about 540p, after which a neural network algorithm will restore the image to 1080p. Frame rates are expected to be in the range of 30 to 60 fps, and frame generation should further improve image smoothness.
When connected to a TV, the system will allegedly be able to use more aggressive scaling profiles, which will reduce the load on the graphics accelerator by more than 50%. PSSR 3.0 performance will be approximately 10–11 TFLOPS in portable mode and about 14 TFLOPS in stationary mode.
For comparison, the regular PlayStation 5 has a GPU performance of 10.28 TFLOPS, while the PS5 Pro has 16.7 TFLOPS.
Insider KeplerL2 also claims that thanks to such an architecture, the portable console will be able to locally run games from PS4 and PS5 libraries, and later — projects for the next generation of PlayStation. At the same time, the device will allegedly significantly surpass the Nintendo Switch 2 in terms of hardware scaling capabilities.
