New "Resident Evil" Becomes Highest-Rated Game Adaptation in Rotten Tomatoes History

A free interpretation of the canon did not prevent Kregger from gaining critical and audience acclaim.

Zach Kregger's "Resident Evil" topped the Rotten Tomatoes ranking of feature film adaptations of video games. At the time of writing, the horror film received 96% positive reviews, surpassing previous leaders "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" and "Werewolves Within," which both scored 86%.

The film also received high ratings from viewers. After more than 1000 verified ratings, the audience gave the film 92% freshness – this is the best audience score among all live-action films in the Resident Evil franchise.

The film received such high ratings amidst controversy surrounding changes to the plot, chronology, and the absence of familiar characters like Leon Kennedy. According to reviews, Kregger managed to preserve what was most important for many viewers: bloody horror with black humor, tension, and the feeling of playing a game, despite noticeable deviations from the canon.

"Resident Evil" will appear in Russian cinemas in early October.
