Microsoft asks players if the next Xbox console needs a disc drive

The company launched a survey.

Microsoft is conducting a survey among Xbox Insider program participants, directly asking about physical media support in the next console.

In the survey, users are asked to rate potential features of the future console on a three-point scale: “Not needed,” “Would be nice,” and “Must have.” The last option effectively means that the participant will not buy a new Xbox if the corresponding feature is absent.

Among the listed features are some rather unusual ideas. For example, Microsoft is interested in players' opinions on case lighting that changes depending on what's happening in the game, as well as a function for automatically detecting and saving bright gameplay moments for later publication.

Particular attention is drawn to the item related to physical games. It asks users whether the next Xbox should allow installing games from a physical disc.

If the information about the survey is indeed true, it indicates that Microsoft has not yet abandoned the idea of equipping Project Helix with a disc drive. Depending on the survey results, the company could theoretically choose either a built-in drive or a removable option.
