Film based on "Spawn" stuck on script - Todd McFarlane wants a dark horror in the spirit of "The Backrooms"
The project has been in development for over ten years.
Todd McFarlane shared new details about the long-suffering film adaptation of "Spawn." The comic book author wants to make a dark and disturbing horror, aiming for the success of "The Backrooms," but the work has still not progressed beyond the script:
"It has to be really dark, gritty, and disturbing. When you see the success of films like "Obsession" or "The Backrooms," you realize that audiences are ready for something like that. We don't need to make a typical superhero movie. We need to do something different, because we won't have a $200 million budget."
McFarlane named the script as the main problem. He refuses to approve the text because none of the proposed options have yet matched his vision for the film:
"We're still trying to get the script right. I know it's frustrating for everyone - especially me. I haven't given my consent because I haven't read on the pages what I see in my head yet."
According to the author, screenwriters constantly fall into one of two extremes: either they deviate too far from the original source or they follow the comic too meticulously. McFarlane himself does not want to retell the first issues of "Spawn" and hopes to introduce viewers to the character through an independent story.
The project is being developed with Blumhouse and previously received the working title King Spawn. Jamie Foxx is still listed as the lead actor, but the director, start dates for filming, and premiere date have not been announced.
In parallel, a full-length animated film based on "Spawn" with Keith David and Mark Hamill is being prepared. Its production is close to completion, but McFarlane previously said that he would release the animated film only after the live-action film. Therefore, its fate directly depends on the long-suffering adaptation.
