The global box office for the horror film "Backrooms of Reality" has exceeded $400 million. The film earned $197.5 million in the US and Canada and another $202.57 million in other markets — a total of $400.07 million against a production budget of only $10 million.
The film was released in North American cinemas on May 29 and remained on screens for almost four months. The horror film collected the main part of its box office in early summer, but continued to bring in money after its digital release in July thanks to ongoing theatrical screenings and international distribution.
China became the largest foreign market, where the film earned $27.8 million. This was followed by Mexico with $17.8 million, the UK with $17.6 million, Australia and New Zealand with $12.3 million, and France with $12.2 million.
"Backrooms of Reality" became the highest-grossing film in A24's history, more than doubling the previous record holder — the sports drama "Marty the Magnificent" with $192 million. The horror film also set a studio record for opening weekend box office: in its first weekend, it earned $81 million in North America and $118 million worldwide.
A sequel has not yet been announced, but director Kane Parsons has already said that he would like to turn "Backrooms of Reality" into a full-fledged film franchise. According to rumors, following the success of the film, the director also signed a three-year contract with the studio with a record fee of $65 million.
