Sony has sent developers a large-scale survey about the future of physical PlayStation releases, which may indicate that it is studying the consequences of discontinuing new disc-based games from January 2028.
A few months ago, Sony announced that it would stop producing physical versions of new PlayStation games from January 2028, explaining the decision by the growth of digital sales. Older games, however, would still be able to be released on disc.
The decision drew criticism from players, but Sony did not report any revision of its plans. Now, insider Moore’s Law Is Dead claims that the company has sent developers one of its largest surveys. It allegedly includes a question about whether abandoning physical games would be a problem.
Sony sent developers a survey that, as my sources told me, is larger than almost all previous ones. It included a question that was indirectly intended to find out: is the abandonment of physical game sales a problem? Sony is asking developers for their opinion on abandoning discs.
According to the insider, Sony is also interested in developers' concerns about the complete abandonment of physical media. He links the survey to the sales of Marvel’s Wolverine, which is reportedly selling well in physical format.
For now, this is only unofficial information, and Sony has not announced any change in plans after January 2028.
