Historian criticized Kingdom Come Deliverance's combat system for being too realistic

The specialist much prefers the more simplified combat implementation in Chivalry.

The Warhorse Studios team put a lot of effort into developing various details when working on Kingdom Come: Deliverance. The project turned out to be quite realistic and, as some experts believe, in some places it turned out to be excessively realistic.

Recently, medieval historian Andrea Maraschi gave an interview to the author of the YouTube channel Andrew Channel. He teaches at a university and studies the life and diet of people of that era, and how they are depicted today in modern media (movies, TV series, video games), and is also a gamer himself.

The creators of Kingdom Come: Deliverance tried to make a very realistic combat system, but Maraschi believes that they shouldn't have gone too far into realism — not all players were able to appreciate the final result.

The specialist believes that excessive realism in games doesn't work:

As far as I remember, [the developers] launched quite a few advertising campaigns related to motion capture, with a very accurate and realistic reconstruction of the combat process itself. Although I am not an expert in this field, in the end, few found [such combat] engaging. And this is one of the problems: after all, a game is a game, so, it seems to me, excessive realism never works. That's the impression I got.

I falsi miti sul Medioevo in cui cadono anche i videogiochi | Intervista ad Andrea Maraschi

Andrea Maraschi said that he prefers the combat system in the online action game Chivalry, and in Kingdom Come: Deliverance, he enjoyed ordinary walks around the world:

It's a paradox: I really appreciate realism, but I spent much more time in Chivalry than in Kingdom Come. My best moments in Kingdom Come were when I wasn't doing anything at all.

His interlocutor supported him: «That's the beauty of the game: the ability to talk to NPCs, explore the world, try to rob someone, then get caught and get a beating. It's fun precisely because of this: the simulation is incredibly immersive».
