Director of "Avengers: Doctor Doom" Explained Why Marvel Changes Beloved Characters
Anthony Russo spoke about the most challenging part of working on the cinematic universe.
Director of "Avengers: Doctor Doom" Anthony Russo, during a meeting with viewers after the screening of "Avengers: Endgame Encore" in New York, spoke about what it's like to work with familiar characters for many years. He named one of the main difficulties as the attempt to maintain a balance between respect for the characters' journey, their further development, and the desire to surprise viewers:
"We have great respect for the journey these characters have taken. That's a significant part of their appeal. At the same time, we need to surprise ourselves with who they can become, where they can go, what they can do, and what can happen to them. Then, hopefully, we'll be able to surprise the audience as well."
Russo understands that not all fans will be happy with such changes. However, it's also not easy to rely on fandom's opinion: viewers can have completely different ideas about the same characters.
"This is a very difficult part of the process. We have to rely on our own intuition because we love these characters and their story as much as many fans do. But we always remind people that fandom doesn't speak with one voice. Opinions vary greatly: viewers have different attitudes towards characters and individual versions of these characters."
A clear example of this approach was the return of Robert Downey Jr. — after the death of Tony Stark in "Avengers: Endgame," the actor will appear in the cinematic universe as Victor von Doom:
"We need to find a balance between challenging ourselves — for example, inviting Robert Downey Jr. to play Victor von Doom — and being true to the well-thought-out, perfectly executed path the story has taken up to this point."
"Avengers: Doctor Doom" will be released worldwide on December 18, 2026. When the film will reach Russian cinemas is not yet known.
