Marvel's Wolverine significantly lost to Spider-Man in Japan - sales were three times lower

Logan failed to repeat Spider-Man's success in Japan: Wolverine had a weaker start than all previous Insomniac Marvel games.

Marvel’s Wolverine sold 20,039 physical copies in Japan in its first week, significantly trailing the launch results of previous Insomniac Games titles in the Marvel universe.

For comparison, Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS4 launched with 125,154 copies, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PS5 with 77,348, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PS5 and PS4 with 41,522. Wolverine came in last in this comparison.

The difference with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is particularly noticeable: both games launched exclusively on PS5, yet Wolverine sold less than a third of the sequel's copies. Famitsu data only accounts for physical sales, excluding digital purchases.

The result may be influenced by a smaller PS5 install base in Japan compared to PS4 and the popularity of Nintendo Switch 2. Also, Spider-Man remains one of the most popular Marvel heroes in Japan and worldwide. However, Wolverine is also among the publisher's most well-known characters.

The game received generally positive reviews, although some gameplay elements were criticized. The data only covers the first week of sales so far.
