Guillermo del Toro gave up on video game adaptations after BioShock negotiations
The director's attempts to work with video games have repeatedly ended in project cancellations.
Guillermo del Toro no longer wants to make video game adaptations. In an interview with IGN, the director said that he tried to take on a BioShock film, but the negotiations left him with extremely unpleasant impressions:
“We had a couple of calls about BioShock. Those were probably some of the most unsuccessful conversations of my life. So no, screw it.”
Del Toro did not specify with whom and when exactly he discussed the project, or what caused the disagreements. This is not the first time his attempts to work with video games have ended in project cancellation. In 2010, the horror game InSane was announced, which was canceled two years later. Then, the director, along with Hideo Kojima and Norman Reedus, participated in the creation of Silent Hills, but Konami canceled that game as well. Later, del Toro appeared as Deadman in Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding, but he was not directly involved in the game's development.
Netflix is currently working on a BioShock adaptation. Filming is planned to begin in 2027, after director Francis Lawrence completes work on “The Hunger Games: Sunrise of the Harvest”. The premiere date has not yet been announced.
