Players losing PS5 accounts - scammers have learned to bypass PlayStation protection

PlayStation players are complaining about an increase in PSN account hijacking, with scammers sometimes managing to bypass even two-factor authentication through Sony's support service.

More and more reports of account hacks are appearing on forums and social networks. Players note that losing access can now mean losing a game library worth hundreds or thousands of dollars, especially given the industry's shift to digital distribution.

Judging by the descriptions of the cases, attackers use social engineering, not classic hacking. After obtaining a password or access to a linked email, they contact support and convince employees to disable 2FA, for example, under the pretext of losing their phone.

After seizing an account, scammers can send offensive messages from it. As a result, the moderation system blocks the profile, and its real owner has to prove that the violations were committed by an attacker.

Owners of short and rare PSN nicknames are especially often attacked. In case of account loss, it is recommended to contact Sony support as soon as possible, preparing the console's serial number or proof of purchases in the PS Store.
