Gears of War: E-Day Creators Glad Game Isn't on PS5: "This Way We Can Ensure High Quality"
The creators of Gears of War: E-Day consider Xbox exclusivity an advantage, as it allowed them to focus on a single hardware platform and achieve high graphical quality at 60 FPS with hardware ray tracing.
For The Coalition team, Microsoft's decision to return to an exclusives policy became a source of pride. Creative Director Matt Searcy and Art Director Aryan Hanbeck consider the opportunity to present such a project as a testament to the studio's technical prowess.
According to the developers, working with a limited set of hardware allowed them not to spend resources on adapting the game for multiple platforms and to get the most out of Unreal Engine 5. Among the technologies used are MegaLights, which allows hundreds of dynamic light sources to simultaneously illuminate scenes, and Lumen global illumination.
“This way we can ensure high quality,” the developers believe. According to them, impressive graphics, smooth animation thanks to the motion matching system, and photorealistic real-time cutscenes became possible due to prioritizing quality rather than striving to release the game on every competing platform.
However, exclusivity creates commercial risks: the game needs to show high results among users of its own ecosystem to recoup a large budget. Initial Steam data from early access indicates significant success.
