Along with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on October 23, a new large-scale DMZ mode, built around extraction shooter mechanics, will appear in the game. The developers talked about the key features of the mode, the structure of the player base, deployment options, and ways to gain experience and rewards.
The center of DMZ will be a forward operating base where players will manage their progress, equipment, and preparation for the next raid. As operations in Khajin are completed, the base will evolve: from a small fortified outpost, it will gradually transform into a full-fledged command center with more than a dozen different stations.
Initially, players will have access to several basic facilities. At the operative station, you can select an active operative and check their status. DMZ Orders is designed to view current tasks, and the inventory stores looted items and equipment for the next deployment. In addition, the base will have a firing range where you can test weapons on various targets, and through the deployment station, players go directly to Khajin.
As successful sorties are completed, new base capabilities unlock. A 3D printer will allow you to create various items from found resources and use them to improve other stations. In the armory, you can modify found weapons for in-game currency or create new samples if the player has obtained the corresponding blueprint.
The base will also feature a merchant with a constantly changing assortment of weapons and useful equipment. The hunt for the most dangerous players can be tracked via the target board, while the boss list will help find high-priority targets — lieutenants and other strong enemies hiding in Khajin. A separate token stand will allow displaying trophies obtained after defeating other operatives.
Progress in DMZ itself will be moved to a separate level system from 1 to 70. As players advance, they will unlock new base stations and receive additional rewards.
Before starting an operation, the player will be able to choose one of three deployment options. Story missions will allow players to complete and replay story tasks in Khajin for large rewards. Dynamic operations send the squad directly to a dynamic operation: for completing it, players receive money, experience, and drops, and the quality of the reward increases with successful completion of operations.
The third option is free exploration. In this case, players go to Khajin without a specific mission and can independently explore the city, search for loot, and decide what to do during the sortie.
The developers recommend primarily completing story missions, tasks, and assignments — these will be one of the main sources of experience and valuable items. Additional experience can be gained by hunting lieutenants and commanders. These strong enemies move around different areas of Khajin, and eliminating them provides experience, weapons, and valuable loot.
Regular looting will also play a big role. Found items can be used in the 3D printer at the base, and constant collection of loot also helps increase the rating of a specific deployment.
Various vehicles, including ground, water, and air transport, will be useful for quick movement around Khajin. They can be repaired and refueled at gas stations.
Finally, different areas of Khajin will have their own threat level. The more noise a squad makes, the more aggressive enemy reaction can be expected in a particular area. Therefore, in some situations, stealth may prove significantly more effective than open combat.
