Naughty Dog sells Sony consoles, so the studio doesn't necessarily have to be profitable, says former The Last of Us developer
He is former not because he made such statements and believed that the studio could be unprofitable.
Creating AAA games is becoming increasingly expensive, yet Sony continues to allow its leading studios to work on large-scale single-player projects for years. According to former Naughty Dog VFX artist Matt Radford, one reason is that Sony needs such games not only for direct sales but also to promote PlayStation.
In an interview with the YouTube channel Kiwi Talkz, Radford, who worked on The Last of Us and Uncharted 4, stated that, in his understanding, Naughty Dog essentially exists to promote Sony's gaming hardware.
As far as I understand, Naughty Dog exists to sell Sony hardware. The reason Naughty Dog is so great is that the studio is not as profit-driven as other companies because it is a flagship that sells hardware.
According to Radford, this model allows Naughty Dog to invest years and huge budgets into linear story-driven games that are not designed for endless monetization. He also believes that Sony earns a significant portion of its money directly from hardware sales, and exclusive projects help make PlayStation more attractive to buyers.
