"Discs are Doomed": Developer Explains the Future of Games

Physical boxes won't disappear immediately, but will increasingly become packaging with a download code, because modern games no longer fit on a single disc.

CyberConnect2 CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama believes physical game editions are "doomed to fail" because digital distribution is more convenient, more profitable for developers, and better suited to the size of modern games.

Matsuyama admitted that he understands players' attachment to boxed versions, but today discs cannot compete with digital releases in terms of convenience. The production of physical copies also requires additional costs: developers buy discs and cartridges from platform owners like Sony and Nintendo.

The head of CyberConnect2 noted that for Capcom and Square Enix, the overwhelming majority of sales already come from digital distribution. In his opinion, supporting the production of boxed versions for a diminishing audience of collectors is becoming increasingly difficult.

If you want games on physical media, even if it means lower salaries, we can do that. However, I don't think anyone really wants that.

He also pointed to GTA VI: modern games are becoming so large that all their content often does not fit on a single disc. At the same time, physical boxes will not disappear immediately; one option could be editions with a code for downloading the game.
