Modder constructs a portable version of the Atari 2600 console with a built-in CRT screen

Thanks to modder Nick Bild, the µTari Go device has come to life - a portable version of the Atari 2600 console. It features a 4-inch CRT screen, a slot for physical cartridges, and a 3D-printed case.

Modder Nick Bild has successfully created a portable version of the Atari 2600. This is a true portable console, specifically designed to run original Atari 2600 cartridges, with a fully integrated screen and without any emulation.

He constructed a device called µTari Go (micro-Tari Go), which uses the original 6507 processor and does without an FPGA. This is true old-school computer hardware, complemented by a 4-inch CRT screen for gaming on the go and beyond.

The portable device has: built-in controls, speakers, audio amplifiers, and a cartridge slot — all housed in a 3D-printed case. The device is powered by an external 12-volt connector, which can be connected to a portable battery.

Naturally, in terms of graphics, it's not as impressive as pulling out some fancy smartphone from your pocket, but for any retrogamer, this looks much cooler. And the fact that the console plays physical cartridges makes it even more valuable.

Some portals believe that ModRetro, by reviving the Game Boy with its metal-plastic Chromatic console, has revitalized the Game Boy gaming scene. Who knows — perhaps people will start creating more games for Atari if a similar portable device also gains popularity.
