SEGA has unveiled an unusual collectible souvenir in honor of the 35th anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog series — a figurine of the blue hedgehog with synthetic DNA inside. This unique item will cost almost 1.8 million rubles, or about $21,000, not including shipping costs.

SEGA showcased the full-size version of the figurine back in June. It was created in collaboration with LOM BABY — a biotechnology and art team known for their unusual projects, including an artificial sample of the T-virus from Resident Evil and synthetic dragon meat. The original statue is currently located at the SEGA store in Tokyo's Shibuya district.

The high price of the item is explained by its unusual concept. LOM BABY specialists developed a synthetic genetic code for the character by analyzing his appearance, character, signature abilities, and even his inability to swim. The resulting artificial DNA was placed inside a glowing green Chaos Emerald located in the figurine's chest.

This is not real biological material: the artificial DNA is made from nucleic acid — a molecule that stores the genetic information of living organisms. The figurine's body, the Chaos Emerald, and the transparent lens that allows viewing the contents inside are made of resin.
