Sony Pictures Entertainment announced the creation of Crunchyroll Storyworks — a new division that will work in two directions at once. The team will focus on transforming stories from around the world into anime, as well as developing live-action films and series based on Japanese animation.
Storyworks will unite specialists from Crunchyroll, Aniplex, and Sony Pictures with Japanese authors and studios. At the same time, Sony promises to involve the creators of original works in the adaptation process to preserve their initial vision.
Ravi Ahuja, Head of Sony Pictures Entertainment, explained why the company is emphasizing this:
“Anime has become a global cultural force thanks to the creators, studios, and publishers who have spent decades developing its distinctive storytelling and unforgettable characters. As anime grows, we have a responsibility to protect and amplify what makes it special, always keeping the author’s vision at the center. This is the purpose of Storyworks.”
Toru Yokibe, who previously handled intellectual property development at the intersection of Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, has been appointed head of the new division. Projects prepared by Storyworks will be submitted for consideration to HAYATE — a joint company of Crunchyroll and Aniplex, which will be able to undertake their further production.
What specific works Sony intends to adapt first is not yet known.
