Amazon seems to have decided to make up for lost time due to Ryan Hurst's replacement by Dave Bautista.

The first and second seasons of the God of War series for Prime Video are planned to be filmed back-to-back, insider DanielRPK reported. According to him, Callum Vinson, who plays Atreus, will also be replaced in the second season. Rumors about this appeared back in August, when journalists found information about the search for new, older actors for the roles of Atreus and Thrud.

The reasons for this decision are still unknown, but filming two seasons back-to-back could help make up for lost time. Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television began work on the first season in February 2026 and managed to film four episodes before Ryan Hurst, who plays Kratos, tore his biceps. The actor required surgery, and a long recovery threatened to delay the resumption of filming until 2027.

Ultimately, Hurst was replaced by Dave Bautista. Now the team will have to re-shoot scenes with Kratos in the already completed episodes, as well as continue work on the remaining series. According to media reports, filming with the new lead actor was supposed to resume in Vancouver in mid-October, but it is not yet known whether the work has begun.

Ronald D. Moore, known for "Battlestar Galactica" and "Outlander," serves as the showrunner and screenwriter for the series. The adaptation is based on God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarök. The first season will tell the story of Kratos and Atreus' journey to the highest mountain to scatter Faye's ashes, but along the way, they become embroiled in a confrontation with the Norse gods.

The premiere date for God of War has not yet been announced.
