Mike Flanagan Explained How the New "Dark Tower" Will Avoid the Mistakes of the Film with Idris Elba
The director explained how the new adaptation will begin and why it's important.
Mike Flanagan, in The Process Unlocked podcast, discussed how he plans to bring Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" to the screen. The director intends to follow the order of the books and start with "The Gunslinger" so that viewers gradually get acquainted with the vast universe:
"The problem with other approaches is that people try to start in the middle or choose some other starting point. You can't throw the viewer face-first into this huge universe. It's too overwhelming."
According to Flanagan, King has already found a way to tell a grand story without overwhelming the reader with details on the very first pages. The key is to stick to the same structure and reveal the world as the characters journey through it:
"The story of 'The Dark Tower' begins with two people in the desert. It's the simplest start to a story. There's nothing in front of the reader to distract them, and King builds the universe from that point, stone by stone. [...] That's how my adaptation is structured. I just followed the books and their order."

Initially, the director planned to shoot five seasons of the series and conclude the adaptation with two feature films. Whether these plans remain, as well as the start dates for filming and the estimated premiere date, is currently unknown.
