According to Giant Bomb journalist Jeff Grubb, Disney is considering entrusting the new Star Wars: Battlefront to Bungie. He spoke about this in one of the episodes of the Game Mess Mornings podcast. According to his information, official development has not yet begun, but discussions about which team could take on the project are already underway.
DICE, the studio that created the previous installments of the series, remains among the potential developers. However, as Grubb claims, Disney may have accumulated dissatisfaction with its cooperation with Electronic Arts, under whose wing DICE operates.
The reason for the strained relations could be the scandalous story surrounding Star Wars Battlefront II, released in 2017. The progression system with Star Cards and microtransactions drew sharp criticism from players and attracted the attention of regulators in various countries. The scandal surrounding loot boxes in the game became one of the most notable episodes in the discussion about regulating such mechanics.
Subsequently, DICE reworked the progression system, abandoned the original character development model, added new content, and made many other improvements. Over time, Battlefront II gained recognition from a significant part of the community, despite a controversial start.
Bungie's possible involvement looks like an unexpected choice. The studio is known primarily for Halo and Destiny, and its new project Marathon has faced difficulties in attracting a wide audience. Although the developers have already talked about plans for game development and the release of new content, its current performance does not allow calling the launch an unconditional success.
