Following in James Cameron's Footsteps - "Godzilla Minus Zero" Director Inspired by "Aliens" and "Terminator 2"

Empire magazine presented a new still from the film "Godzilla Minus Zero" and spoke with director Takashi Yamazaki about creating the sequel. The filmmaker admitted that one of his main sources of inspiration was James Cameron's "Aliens" and "Terminator 2," whom he particularly values for his ability to develop the ideas of original films:

"I have to give credit to James Cameron. He takes the original, finds a new interesting hook in it, and explores it much deeper. Often his sequels look at the story from a slightly different angle, but at the same time build on everything that was laid out in the first film. I was interested to understand how he manages to largely surpass the originals with his sequels."
Takashi Yamazaki

For Yamazaki, such a new direction was the family story of the main characters. If in "Godzilla Minus One" former kamikaze pilot Koichi Shikishima tried to cope with guilt for his military past and gradually grew closer to Noriko and little Akiko, then in the sequel they will be at the center of the plot as a family.

"The transition from Shikishima's story as an individual to the story of the whole family became a different direction for "Minus Zero.""

Yamazaki will also continue to draw parallels between the fates of the heroes and the post-war recovery of Japan. The action of the new film will unfold two years after the previous part, when the country is gradually recovering from the war and Godzilla's attack, but the hard-won peace is threatened:

"I think there are certain parallels between Japan's recovery at that time and the formation of the Shikishima family. In "Minus Zero," the country's situation, like the Shikishima family's situation, is gradually improving. In a sense, they are approaching "zero," but a new threat emerges that can take it all away."

Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe returned to their roles. Yamazaki once again served as director, screenwriter, and visual effects supervisor.

"Godzilla Minus Zero" will be released in Japanese cinemas on November 3, and in North America on November 6, 2026. The film became the first Japanese film designated as Filmed for IMAX.
