Call of Duty adaptation director Peter Berg spoke about his vision for the upcoming film based on the Modern Warfare universe. While promoting his new war drama "The Mosquito Coast," the filmmaker explained to ComicBook that he wants to show not only combat operations but also the price paid by those involved:
"If you look closely at the missions, storylines, and characters of Modern Warfare — Captain Price, Soap, Ghost, Alex — these are complex people. With all due respect, these are not cartoon heroes or comic book characters. There are many nuances here; the Modern Warfare universe has a real soul. Yes, there is violence, weaponry, technology, killing. But behind all this, in my opinion, the game creators explore the cost of war. The price paid by a person who becomes a warrior and, for one reason or another, decides to stand between real danger and all of us. They show the burden these people carry."
Berg is working on the script with Taylor Sheridan, creator of "Yellowstone." According to the director, they share similar views on what the adaptation should be like:
"These are serious things. We're not just going to say, 'Hey, let's shoot everyone and entertain the audience!' There's a soul behind it that both Taylor Sheridan and I understand. I think the film won't be as naturalistically violent as 'The Mosquito Coast,' but it will have a strong emotional foundation, and the consequences of war will definitely make themselves felt."
Paramount, its parent company Skydance, and Activision Blizzard Studios are responsible for the film's production. Although Modern Warfare was chosen as the basis for the adaptation, the creators have not yet specified which characters will appear on screen or whether the plot will replicate the events of one of the games.
