Video blogger and producer Seán McLoughlin, known as Jacksepticeye, told IGN in an interview that a director and writer have joined the animated adaptation of Bloodborne. Their names have not yet been revealed, but the team has already decided on the general direction and is developing the plot.
“The project is much further along in development now than it was back then. As a fan, I would personally love to tell everything right away, but then the anticipation and the fun of the process would disappear. We’ve mapped out where the story is going in much greater detail and found the people who will help bring it all to life. Hopefully, soon we’ll be able to announce who is involved in the project, where it’s heading, and reveal a bit of the plot.”
McLoughlin admits that working on the adaptation is both exciting and nerve-wracking because of the responsibility to the fans:
“I’m proud of my work on the film. It’s an incredibly fascinating endeavor, and I genuinely enjoy it. But at the same time, it can be very tough because you’re taking on such a massive franchise. And I’m the kind of person who says, ‘We have to get everything perfect, down to the smallest detail.’ Is perfection even achievable? I don’t know. It’s probably impossible to satisfy everyone’s expectations in a single piece of work. But I feel like I’m in the right place, and we have every opportunity to make something truly cool.”
The team intends to tell a standalone story in the Bloodborne universe. As successful examples of this approach, the producer cites the Fallout series and recent Resident Evil projects:
“When a story leaves the freedom and opportunity to tell other stories within the same universe, that’s always the most interesting thing to me. I really don’t want to take a franchise and just retell the game’s plot all over again. We’ve seen that so many times. I won’t name specific projects—people will probably remember the adaptations anyway—but that approach just doesn’t work. Fallout and Resident Evil are good recent examples: it’s still the same world. We just shift the focus a bit and get something truly interesting inside it.”
PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation are working on the adaptation, with financial backing from Sony and Lyrical Media. The film is aimed at an adult audience and will be rated R. A release date has not yet been announced, and Jacksepticeye hopes to introduce the team members and first plot details in the near future.
