“Everything old is new again”: new map in Modern Warfare 4 turns out to be older than some Call of Duty fans

Remembering Burgundy.

Players have discovered that the new Backstab map for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is a near-exact replica of Burgundy from Call of Duty 2, released in 2005. It is designed for 6v6 battles. The resemblance to the original was pointed out by Reddit users who compared screenshots of both locations.

  • The layout of Backstab almost completely replicates Burgundy, including the central courtyard and two two-story buildings on opposite sides of the map
  • At the same time, the developers changed the setting: instead of a World War II-era French countryside, players will find a snow-covered settlement, presumably located in Russia or North Korea
  • In the original Burgundy, buildings with machine gun nests and views of the central part of the map played an important role. In the new version, these spots will likely become prime positions for snipers

This is not the first time developers have revisited classic maps from the series. For example, Taraq from Modern Warfare 2 (2022) is based on Neuville from the original Call of Duty, while Suldal Harbor from Modern Warfare (2019) is based on the Harbor map from the first installment.
