James Gunn would love to see Margot Robbie return as Harley Quinn. On the podcast The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon?, the head of DC Studios shared that the character will appear in the new DC cinematic universe sooner or later, but whether the actress herself will reprise the role remains unknown:
“She is incredible. I adore her as Harley. I don’t know if she wants to play Harley again. Maybe she’s already moved on from the role. But if Margot wants to play her in the DCU, I will bend over backward to fit her into the world seamlessly.”
Margot Robbie first played Harley Quinn in David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad”, later returning to the role in “Birds of Prey” and “The Suicide Squad”, directed by Gunn himself. Around the release of the latter film, the actress admitted that after two projects in a row, she needed a break from the character:
“Filming ‘Birds of Prey’ and this movie happened practically back-to-back, so I thought, ‘Oof, I need to take a break from Harley because she’s exhausting.’ I don’t know when we’ll see her next. I’m just as intrigued as everyone else.”
So far, no projects featuring Harley Quinn have been announced in the new DC universe, and Robbie herself has not stated any plans to return to the role.
