Amanda Waller series stuck in development hell — James Gunn explained why

DC Studios has not completely abandoned the project yet.

James Gunn explained why the “Waller” series starring Viola Davis has not yet entered production. On the official podcast The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon?, the co-head of DC Studios admitted that the studio never managed to achieve the desired result:

“We actively developed the Waller series, but we never greenlit it because it just didn’t get to the level we wanted it to be at. That doesn’t mean it’s completely stopped development.”

“Waller” was announced among the first projects of the new DC Universe. The series was supposed to continue the events of “Peacemaker” and show the aftermath of Amanda's daughter, Leota Adebayo, exposing her black ops. However, work on the project dragged on, and in August 2026, TheWrap reported that it was no longer among DC Studios' priorities.

At the same time, regardless of the fate of the series, Gunn has no intention of abandoning the character herself and already knows how to continue her story if Viola Davis wants to return to the role:

“I have plans for Waller if Viola wants to continue. We know what’s happening with her.”
