Fan-made Dota 2 released on smartphones — players fear sanctions from Valve due to developers’ audacity

The creators of the unofficial adaptation decided to monetize the project through in-game purchases.

The creators of Dota 2 Mobile announced the release of version 1.0 for Android and iOS. The fan adaptation brings the familiar battles, heroes, and mechanics of Dota 2 to smartphones, but is being developed without Valve’s involvement. By the time of the release, the character roster was expanded to 40 heroes and over 300 cosmetic items, the menu and interface were updated, and in the future, the developers plan to add a friends system and lobbies.

Some Reddit users were so impressed by the work done that they even suggested Valve hire the mobile version’s creators. However, not everyone shared the enthusiasm: alongside the release, the developers encouraged supporting the project with in-game purchases. Such monetization raised concerns among part of the community — players believe that attempting to profit from someone else’s franchise could draw the copyright holder’s attention and put an end to the project.

Valve itself has not yet publicly reacted to the release.
