Monolith Soft confirms involvement in development of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake

The partnership between Nintendo and Monolith Soft has been ongoing for many years. In 2024, Nintendo finalized the buyout of the remaining shares in the developer, becoming the sole owner of the studio. Prior to this, the Japanese company controlled 96% of Monolith Soft's shares.

Known for the Xenoblade Chronicles series, studio Monolith Soft has confirmed that it took part in the development of the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The team assisted Nintendo in creating the game by handling game design, programming, and graphics.

Monolith Soft has long acted as a partner to Nintendo in creating games in the Zelda series. In particular, the studio took part in the development of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom.

At the same time, the nature of the collaboration between the two teams has evolved over time. While during the work on Skyward Sword Monolith Soft primarily created game assets based on Nintendo's technical specifications, during the development of Breath of the Wild the studios much more frequently conceptualized and implemented game ideas together.

Zelda series general manager Daiki Iwamoto previously called Monolith Soft a strong partner and expressed a desire to give it a more significant role in the creation of future franchise titles. According to him, the accumulated collaborative experience and the potential of the entire Monolith Soft team could be used to create a completely new game in the series.

In turn, the studio's director and animator Yasuhiro Fujita also noted that Monolith Soft is gradually gaining more autonomy in joint projects.

Beyond Zelda, the developers have also assisted Nintendo with other famous franchises. Last year, the studio confirmed its involvement in creating the open world for Mario Kart World, one of the launch titles for the Nintendo Switch 2. In addition, Monolith Soft has served as a support team in the development of projects in the Animal Crossing, Splatoon, and Pikmin series.
