“Stranger Things” star lands one of the lead roles in the “Magic: The Gathering” adaptation

Legendary and Hasbro intend to create a cinematic universe based on the cult card game.

Legendary and Hasbro have confirmed the involvement of Maya Hawke, known to audiences for her role as Robin Buckley in “Stranger Things”, in the adaptation of Magic: The Gathering. Her character’s name is currently kept secret, but according to Deadline, the actress has landed one of the lead roles. Moreover, Hawke received the offer without an audition: the producers approached her first, whereas many other cast members are yet to be found through casting.

Matt Johnson, best known for the film “BlackBerry”, will direct. He is also writing the screenplay alongside Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald, though the creators currently prefer to keep plot details under wraps.

Legendary and Hasbro announced the adaptation back in 2025. The studios plan to use it to launch an entire universe of live-action feature films and TV series based on Magic: The Gathering. Which of the card game’s numerous worlds will be featured in the first film remains unknown. The studios have not yet announced a premiere date either.
