The main character, Cohen, is half-human and half-vampire. During the day, the player controls his human side with an emphasis on speed, agility, hand-to-hand combat, and mastering spells. At night, Cohen gains all his powers: he can drink blood, kill enemies, and teleport. Lead quest designer Rafal Jankowski noted that the player will be able to choose how to influence the story and gameplay, combining the human and vampire sides.
The authors drew inspiration from Fallout (especially the first two parts) and Vampire: The Masquerade. The time system also plays a key role: saving Cohen's family is allotted 30 days and nights, the day is divided into eight segments, each quest takes a certain amount of time (1/8, 2/8, etc.), and only after passing all the segments does the action move to the next day. Writer Piotr Kucharski explained that this helps to plan actions without interfering with the completion of the main tasks.
"If Cohen promises to help someone, it takes time. Key moments speed up the passage of time so that the player understands that the culmination or turning point of events is approaching".
