"The best definition of Dune: Awakening that I've heard is that survival is a key aspect. It's a kind of survival role-playing game in the Dune universe. And the MMO part is needed to create a sense of a living world where there is politics, intrigue, and factional conflict," said producer Ole Andreas Hæli in an interview.

The main problem for Funcom is the balance between PvE and PvP. At the start, many PvE-oriented players were cut off from progress due to the binding of resources to the PvP zone. Now, some of the values have been transferred to the starting area of the Deep Desert, where PvE is active.

"It's important that everything feels fair, whether you're attacking or defending. If the mechanics allow aggression, the player should have a way to respond or leave. Our task is to provide such tools," added Hæli.

According to him, the developers continue to seek balance: the Deep Desert remains a PvP sandbox, but the PvE community receives its own alternatives. Funcom hopes that over time, both audiences will find common ground—for example, through auctions and resource exchange.
