In an interview, EU5 Art Director David Horler explained that the studio deliberately integrated successful mechanics from various games of the publisher. The team focused on Imperator: Rome, Crusader Kings III, and Victoria 3.
The combat system in EU5 is based on the model from Imperator: Rome. The approach to dividing territories, where supply and food for the army became key, was also taken from there. From Crusader Kings III, the developers transferred the work with characters. Their personal qualities and influence on others will now be more detailed. This system will emphasize the promotion of heroes and their depth, which was lacking in EU4. The economy and trade are inspired by Victoria 3. According to Horler, these aspects in EU4 were poorly developed, and in the new part, players will be able to develop the economy without mandatory military expansion.
Horler is confident that the release of Europa Universalis V will strengthen Paradox Interactive's position:
"EU4 is our key strategy. Now is the moment to show what we are capable of. We are the best in the genre and we prove it."
