"Tron: Ares" will be the first film in the franchise in 15 years, but besides Kevin Flynn, played by Jeff Bridges, viewers will hardly see the old heroes.
15 years after the release of "Tron: Legacy", Disney is preparing to release the third part - "Tron: Ares". The new film will focus on an artificial intelligence named Ares, played by Jared Leto, who is moving from the digital world to reality for the first time.
Only Jeff Bridges will return to his role - he will play Kevin Flynn again. But other familiar characters, including Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), Quorra (Olivia Wilde) and Dillinger Jr. (Cillian Murphy), will not appear in the film.
According to director Joachim Rønning, the decision not to bring back the old characters was not only creative: "Sometimes actors just don't want to participate in the project anymore", he said in an interview with SFX magazine.
Rønning also explained that the story develops in such a way that the participation of old heroes is simply not required. And producer Justin Springer added that unnecessary cameos would not benefit the plot.
"We are telling a story that takes place 14 years later, and the most important thing is to make it work on its own. Inserting cameos, a parade of favorite characters from the franchise - in my opinion, this is fan service that harms the story. But at the same time, we definitely want to surprise the audience".
The premiere of the film "Tron: Ares" is scheduled for October 10.
