Almost three decades after the release of the original PlayStation, it has become possible to determine the games with the greatest impact on the US market.
Analysts at Circana have published a ranking of the 20 best-selling PS1 games of all time in the US, covering the period from January 1995 to July 2025. The data shows not only the revenue leaders but also the number of copies sold.
At the top of the list in terms of revenue is Gran Turismo, a racing simulator from Polyphony that changed the genre on Sony consoles. Interestingly, Gran Turismo 2 leads in terms of units sold, confirming the strength of the series at the beginning and end of the PS1's life cycle. Final Fantasy VII, one of the most iconic RPGs of that era, ranks second in revenue but lower in the number of copies.
The differences between the tables show how some games generated more revenue even without being sales leaders. This was influenced by special editions, the price at the start of sales, and the length of time on sale. Popular series include Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, and Tekken 3.
There are also unexpected hits in the top 20, such as Frogger (1997), as well as compilations like Jampack Series: PlayStation and Namco Museum Vol. 3. Sales of games bundled with the console were not included in the statistics; only direct sales were counted.
