Square Enix is preparing a full-fledged remake of the classic Japanese role-playing game, released on PlayStation One in 2001.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is being created from scratch and will be released on February 5, 2026, on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2.
As the publisher emphasizes, this is not a port of the Nintendo 3DS version, but a completely updated game with a modern visual and mechanical foundation. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined uses the style of " оживших диорам" (living dioramas) — visually, it is a combination of three-dimensional environments with a vibrant artistic style and designs by Akira Toriyama.
The plot is still based on the story of heroes restoring a destroyed world. However, the narrative has been reworked: it now develops faster and smoother, as the protracted fragments of the original have been removed. New side quests, mini-games, and additional story arcs have been added.
Significant changes have also affected the combat system. Reimagined will feature the Let Loose mechanic — powerful techniques that can be activated in a certain state. The Moonlighting system is also introduced, allowing you to combine two professions at once. One of the new ones will be Monster Master — this class allows you to summon creatures to fight on the hero's side.
In addition to the standard release, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will receive a collector's edition with a plush slime, a ship-in-a-bottle model, and a metal case, as well as a digital deluxe version with early access for two days and additional content packs.
