The engine was created by Guerrilla Games in 2013 for Killzone: Shadow Fall. Together with Hideo Kojima, the studio improved Decima to its current level.
Although the engine does not have all the features of Unreal Engine 5, it is considered one of the best internal solutions in the industry. On Reddit, a user, referring to a conversation with a developer at a recent Kojima event in London, reported that Sony may license Decima to other studios. It is not yet known whether this will be limited to its own projects or will include third-party developers.
Earlier, vacancies showed that internal studios like Bend are creating games on Decima. The engine allows you to create visuals comparable to Unreal Engine without the need for ray tracing and other resource-intensive technologies. Death Stranding 2 showed that you can achieve impressive graphics with high optimization, confirming the superiority of Decima.
Although the rumors look plausible, it is worth taking them with caution. The developer noted that The Last of Us Online was promising until Bungie intervened. Time will tell how Sony will manage the engine in the future.
