Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser has stated that he considers Red Dead Redemption 2 to be the studio's best work. Among other projects he highlighted were GTA 4, GTA 5, and the original Red Dead Redemption.
Although Rockstar is most often associated with the Grand Theft Auto series, its portfolio also includes other well-known franchises such as Max Payne, Bully, and L.A. Noire. But, according to Houser, it was Red Dead Redemption 2 that became the highest point for the company. Many fans agree, as the game is still called the benchmark for story-driven open-world projects.
During an interview at LA Comic Con 2025 for IGN, Houser talked about various studio projects. He explained why the sequel to Bully never came out, and separately noted the significance of Red Dead Redemption 2:
"I think Red Dead 2 is the best thing I've ever done. It's the most cohesive realization of an open world, sequence of themes, and emotional journey."
Houser also praised GTA 4 for attempting to develop the narrative and acknowledged that the experiment with three characters in GTA 5 was successful, albeit not without problems.
